Health Policy and Practice

HPPN is led by Professor Liz Bondi, Head of the School of Health in Social Sciences, Professor Steve Platt, Director in the Research Unit in Health, Behaviour and Change and Professor Jill Schofield, Somers Chair of Health Care Management.

Research on health and health care at the University of Edinburgh has been going on for 400 years.  Our disciplinary perspectives are many and varied, and include clinical medicine, social and community medicine, health policy, social policy, health management, public management, sociology, psychology, social and medical anthropology and human geography, among others.

The role of HPPN is to:

  • develop and exploit opportunities for inter-disciplinary research collaborations relating to health policy and practice, especially through cross-School and cross-College partnerships;
  • build capacity, promoting a vibrant research culture in health policy and practice through mutual support, mentoring of postgraduate research students and junior researchers and the provision of continuing professional development;
  • disseminate research findings, engaging in effective knowledge transfer and exchange both to influence policy and practice and to engender wider public debate;
  • share best practice among health researchers, both in the University and outside.
